What this site records. And who else is watching.

There is no account here, so there is very little to attach to you. But this site is not alone on the page: search runs on Google, and there is an ad network. Both are named below.

The short version

When you search, Google sees it

The search box on this site is Google Programmable Search. When you type a word and press Search, that word is sent to Google, which returns the results you see. This site does not keep a copy of your query, but Google receives it, and what Google does with it is covered by Google’s privacy policy, not by this one.

An older version of this page said searches “remain private” and were never logged. That was wrong, and it has been removed rather than softened. If you do not want a search engine to see a query, do not type it into a search engine.

Google may also show its own ads alongside the results. Those are Google’s, sold by Google, and this site does not choose them.

What this site records itself

One thing: a counter on each group. When someone opens a group, that group’s number goes up by one, and the time of the most recent open is saved. That is the whole record. It is stored against the group, not against a visitor, and there is no identifier of any kind kept beside it.

It exists so the index can tell a listing people still use from a dead one. It cannot be used to reconstruct what any one person looked at, because the visitor is never part of the row.

Like every website, the servers also write standard access logs: IP address, browser, referring page, timestamp. These are used to keep the site up and to stop abuse. They are not used to build a profile of you, and they are not joined to the group counters.

Notifications and ads

This site is free, and it is paid for by advertising from a network called Monetag. There are two places you will meet it.

Browser notifications. After you interact with a page, your browser may ask whether this site can send you notifications. If you say yes, your browser gives Monetag a subscription address for your device, and Monetag can then send you ads as notifications. If you say no, or ignore it, nothing is created and you are not asked again on that visit. You can undo a yes at any time in your browser settings, under site settings for tgcompass.com — removing the notification permission ends it.

The Join buttons. Selecting a Join button opens the Telegram group in a new tab, and opens an advertiser’s page in the tab you were in. That advertiser sees the ordinary things any website sees when you arrive: your IP address and your browser.

Monetag is an advertising company, and it is reasonable to assume it uses what it receives to target ads. Nothing about you is sold to it by this site, because there is nothing to sell.

Everyone else on the page

These load on the pages you visit. Each one can see your IP address and browser, because that is how the web works.

Google Analytics 4: Measures visits, pages and countries. It sets cookies and it is Google's product, not a self-hosted or cookie-free one. An earlier version of this page claimed the site used Plausible or Matomo. It never has.
Google Programmable Search: Runs the search box, and receives every query typed into it.
Monetag: The advertising network described in the section above.
Buy Me a Coffee: The support widget in the corner. It loads whether or not you use it. Paying anything is handled entirely on their site.
Cloudflare: Serves the site and the database. Traffic passes through Cloudflare's network before it reaches this site's code.

Every group link leads to Telegram. Once you arrive there, you are on Telegram’s service, under Telegram’s privacy policy. This site does not run those groups and cannot see what happens inside them.

Cookies and what is kept in your browser

Set by this site: one item in your browser’s local storage, remembering whether you chose the light or dark theme. It never leaves your device and it is not a cookie.

Set by others: Google Analytics sets cookies. Google Programmable Search and the ad network may set their own. An earlier version of this page said there were no third-party tracking cookies. There are.

Your browser can block or delete all of these. Blocking them does not break search or browsing on this site.

Your rights

If you live in the EU, the UK or Switzerland, the GDPR gives you the right to see what is held about you, correct it, have it deleted, restrict how it is used, take it elsewhere, object to it, and withdraw consent you have given. If you live in California, the CCPA and CPRA give you the right to know, to delete, to opt out, and not to be treated worse for asking.

In practice there is very little here to ask about, because there is no account and nothing links a visit to a person. The honest answer to most requests will be that nothing identifying you exists. Write to legal@tgcompass.com and say roughly when you visited, and that will be checked properly rather than waved away.

Google, Monetag, Buy Me a Coffee and Cloudflare hold their own data about you under their own policies. Requests about that have to go to them, because it is not this site’s to delete.

In the EEA you may also complain to your national data protection authority. The legal grounds relied on here are legitimate interest for keeping the site running and secure, consent for notifications and non-essential cookies, and legal obligation where a law requires it.

Where the data is, and how it is protected

The site runs on Cloudflare’s network, which serves each visitor from whichever of its locations is nearest. There is no single country holding it. An earlier version of this page named the United States, which was not right. The companies listed above are global and move data between countries under their own arrangements.

Everything is served over HTTPS. Access to the database is restricted. No system is perfectly secure, and this one holds almost nothing worth stealing, which is the strongest protection available.

Children

This service is not aimed at children under 13, and nothing here knowingly collects information from them. If you believe a child has sent information through this site, write to legal@tgcompass.com and it will be deleted.

A warning worth more than that paragraph: this site lists public Telegram groups it has not read. It is not a safe space for a child to browse unsupervised.

Changes, and how to reach a person

When this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. This version was written by going through the code and correcting every sentence that did not match it.
